Wellington Street Quietway: huge surge in responses

Thank you to all those cyclists who responded to Westminster's consultations on Quietways between Covent Garden and Waterloo Bridge and between Edgware Road and Fitzrovia.

There was a huge surge in responses in the final week of the consultations. This was probably not unconnected with our leafleting exercise and cyclists' breakfast – Westminster Cycling Campaign's first – in Wellington Street.

Most cyclists we spoke to agreed that the existing popular cycle route needed some improvement. They therefore welcomed the proposal to widen the cycle track in the pedestrianised part of Wellington Street and to lower it where it crossed the Strand footway, so as to make pedestrians more aware that they were crossing a cycle track. Cyclists welcomed the proposal to widen the cycle lane at the northbound approach to the Strand junction from Waterloo Bridge and to remove the bus stop. But many felt that more could be done to protect cyclists there. That was also true of the section along Endell Street and Bow Street.

We will let you know in future news items what happens next.
