Westminster Cycling Campaign: website events
Work has now started on a further section of the East-West Cycle Superhighway alongside Constitution Hill, on the edge of Green Park.
A segregated two-way cycle track is being built along the former horse ride. This was rarely used by horses: the Horse Guards preferred to ride in the main carriageway on their journey to and from their barracks in Knightsbridge.
Until now, the cycle route along Constitution Hill has been a segregated-use path - see photo below. This was far too narrow for a serious number of two-way cyclists. There was always the risk of collision with the rail at the side, with pedestrians or with other cyclists.
Further sections of the East-West Cycle Superhighway are nearing completion along the South Carriage Drive of Hyde Park and through the Lancaster Gate gyratory systems. The sections between Parliament Square and the City and along the West Carriage Drive are already open. The only sections still to start are past Buckingham Palace and along Birdcage Walk.
